This is the expansion reservoir for the Drinkwell fountain.
It hooks in and works fine. I had a hard time getting the screw-off lid off, and couldn’t get the lid to go back on with the gasket in place unless I held it in the “dispensing” position.
That means that I had to fill the reservoir through the little 1/4-inch dispensing hole. Not ideal.
Oh well, we didn’t keep the Drinkwell anyway – the cat we bought it for didn’t like it, so we gave it to the animal shelter. It’s kind of a shame, really; our new cat would probably love the Drinkwell. I don’t think I was going to though; it looked like it was going to be a lot of work to clean.

We have a 5 year old tabby cat who has always liked drinking from faucets and the toilet bowl. After a little research we decided to try out the drinkwell fountain and the reservoir. Our cat has adjusted very well and seems to enjoy the freshwater. The reservoir is easy to clean, fits easily into the fountain – has a little splash/spill action when initially flipping over to place into fountain but nothing a paper towel wont soak up. We tried filling the container with ice as a few other reviews suggested – but the water level is a little less than 3/4 full once the ice melts – and it turns out the cat doesn’t care for the cold water as much as the room temp. Which was good to know prior to taking a trip where we asked the neighbor to check in on the cat and refill the feeder and water as needed. Fountain and reservoir are easy to clean. I would recommend this for people with small pets and busy schedules. Its nice to know that when we’re traveling or working long hours that there is fresh water readily available.

There’s really not much else to say about this reservoir. It works the same exact way as the standard 50oz one does. The extra capacity is great if you have multiple cats. I have 5, myself. I work 24 hour shifts 70 miles away from home and the water capacity lasts about 3 days or so. My cats always have cool, fresh water available to them.

We have had this fountain in our house for several years now, and now another in our vacation place. The extra auxiliary tank works well, and suggest getting it. That way the water will last about two weeks, depending upon thirst, humidity, and temperature. If you go away, and have someone coming in to look after your cat while you area away, you don’t have to worry about their forgetting or not understanding the fountain, because it will last so long. They had a smaller one, and may still, but we decided to get the larger one, after getting the smaller one. An additional benefit is that the motor will really burn out, if the water runs out, so this way you have lots of protection, and don’t need to top up daily.

If you’re looking at this item, then you’ve probably been searching for it for awhile (or you’re making your initial Drinkwell purchase). I’ve tried finding this locally to replace my 50oz reservoir, but no one seems to carry it. So glad I decided to give Amazon a shot! With two cats I’m refilling it about every five to seven days. It’s great.
My only gripe is for all the reservoirs…that rubber seal. I hate having to try to flip the lid over just right hoping the rubber ring/seal stays in the groove so I can screw the lid on. Why couldn’t they just glue that in or something? I’m sure we could still clean it just fine. x.x Not going to take stars away because of that though.
If you have a Drinkwell fountain that accepts these reservoirs, skip the 50oz and go for the 70oz instead. It’s worth it.
